In the beginning...(Genesis 1:1)... they were all with one accord and in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house...(Acts 2:1-2).
In 1988, the beginning of Mighty Wind Worship Center, 12 founding members, were all assembled in one accord and in one place, 3601 Hay St., Waco, Texas, in the home of Augustine and Yolanda Romero. They opened their home to the beginning of God's plans and would unknowingly one day become Ministers and Pastors of Mighty Wind.
At that first meeting, much thought was given to the name of this church, such as: the Spirit of Love and Mighty Wind Church. The founding members, with minds, hearts and spirits united, agreed that the name on the first church sign would read, "Mighty Wind Worship Center, the Church of Love". A new church was born, with no finances, no building, and just a small group of people who were stepping out in faith. Minister Robert Gutierrez was named as founding Pastor. The first services were held at a local motel with an attendance of 55 people.
Looking to move into a permanent building, God used an organizations and a prominent business man to bring about a miracle to supply a church home. Mighty Wind had plans to buy a building at 15th and West St., but God moved the businessman's heart to ultimately offer and give Mighty Wind $15,000 for the rights to that particular building. After taking in a miraculous profit for a property we did not even own, we looked to an old church building located at 11th and Jefferson, 2 blocks from our present location.
The building was vacant and used by transients for shelter. The first home of Mighty Wind, would be transformed from an abandoned building into a lighthouse, that would offer many refuge, hope, and a new life in Christ. Every square inch of that building was used for ministry. Teachers, musicians, ushers, and ministers could be counted on one hand. Nevertheless, God moved in every service, in every way imaginable and always provided whatever was needed for the work of the ministry.
In the sixth year of the church, Minister Joe Carbajal became Senior Pastor with Pastor Augustine Romero at his side. With great blessing came great growth, with the intent to build, God provided. Our current building was provided by God to meet our need and what a blessing this building has been. There is now an abundance of classrooms and administrative offices, not to mention a beautiful sanctuary and spacious fellowship hall. Under Pastor Joe's leadership we have been challenged to learn and teach through relationships, a variety of classes, mission work, and local outreaches. Mighty Wind Worship Center Inc has ordained and licensed a new generation of ministers and leaders.
From 3601 Hay St. to our present, one of the most powerful and vital parts of our church is our worship unto the Lord, it is truly a life changing and spiritual experience that few forget. God was there with us in the beginning, he is truly with us today, and he will be there in our tomorrows. As you journey with us, in the testimony that the founding members have laid, we invite you to experience God's rushing "Mighty Wind" in every area of ministry that we offer.
